About the author

Sunil Kaushik

Linguist, interpreter and author, specialising in the languages of Asia.

Sunil Kaushik is a linguist, interpreter and author who has worked with languages for more than 25 years. He specialises in the languages of Asia, including less-taught ones — from Japanese and Chinese to the frontier tongues of Pashto, Dari and Balochi.

He trained in languages and East Asian studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the University of Delhi and the Japan Foundation, among others, and has studied more than 30 languages — from Russian, German and French to Korean, Urdu, Arabic and Persian.

His career has taken him from film translation and interpreting for government delegations and international exhibitions to years of research and analysis in the intelligence and security field — work in which reading a language precisely really matters. Alongside it runs a long record in IT and information security.

All of this shapes his books: practical, learner-first workbooks that cut through academic clutter and get readers speaking, reading and understanding fast — built on real-world use, not just classroom theory. When he isn’t writing, he’s usually adding a new language to his repertoire.

Work beyond the books

Translation and interpreting

Translation for film and television, and interpreting for government delegations and international exhibitions.

Research and analysis

Years of research and analysis in the intelligence and security field, where every word has to be read exactly right.

Technology and security

A long parallel career in IT and information security, from networks to software and data tools.

How the books are written

01

Plain words

Short sentences and everyday English. If a sentence needs a teacher to explain it, it gets rewritten.

02

Same layout, every page

Each character sits in the same place with the same parts, so your eyes learn the page and your mind is free for the language.

03

Real language

Sentences someone might actually say, readings heard inside real words, and the exam syllabus followed row by row.

04

Nothing left to guess

Every drill has its answer, every hard sound has a picture and an anchor word, and every book has an index.

Languages on the shelf

Japanese and Mandarin Chinese are published now. Books for more languages of Asia are planned.
